About us

Oxfam works globally to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. We respond immediately to emergencies, providing clean water, food, sanitation and shelter.

Oxfam exists for a very simple reason – because poverty and injustice are unacceptable.

Oxfam New Zealand is part of a global organisation that has been dedicated to working with poor communities for over 60 years.

We believe in the power of people to change the world. Together we can address the root causes of inequality and injustice and help people lift themselves out of poverty.

Our vision

In a world rich in resources, everyone has the right to the essentials of life – clean water, food, shelter, sanitation, healthcare, education and a livelihood to support themselves, their children and their community. And everyone has the right to live free from violence, oppression and exploitation.

A safer, fairer, more sustainable world is possible.

Who we are

Oxfam exists because
850 million people live without food, clean water and adequate shelter. Our work helps these people lift themselves out of poverty.

Oxfam New Zealand’s work is made possible by a network of people committed to Oxfam’s vision, including supporters, volunteers, interns, staff, Board of Trustees and overseas partners.

Oxfam New Zealand’s Board of Trustees helps set out the policy and strategic goals that guide our operations.

How we work

Ethna Ioane is an organic grower for Oxfam's partner organisation in Samoa, Women in Business Development. Here she is collecting cocoa pods for sale in Apia, which is her family's main source of income.

Oxfam works in partnership with poor communities and local non-government organisations across the world to help people identify and address the root causes of poverty. Our work helps people achievea life of hope, dignity and opportunity through well targeted, practical support in the Pacific and Southeast Asia.

Funding

Most of Oxfam New Zealand's funds come from generous donations from New Zealanders, supplemented by New Zealand government funds for specific projects.

Our corporate partners also make a crucial contribution to our work.

Environmental sustainability

Climate change is taking its toll on the Pacific islands. Rising sea levels and increased storm intensity erode the coastline and affect people's opportunity to make a living.

Oxfam New Zealand supports communities in developing countries in the Pacific and Southeast Asia to reduce their vulnerability to climate change. As an organisation Oxfam New Zealand is committed to minimising and continuously reducing the negative environmental impacts of our work activities.

Oxfam international confederation

Oxfam New Zealand was formed in 1991 and is a member of the Oxfam international confederation, working together as a worldwide force to overcome poverty and injustice.

Oxfam affiliates have been established in 15 countries:

Oxfam also has two observer members, who are on the path to becoming full members of the Oxfam whanau:

We believe that by working together globally we really can make a difference.
