The Virginia Woolverines

‘Imaginative work...is like a spider's web, attached ever so lightly perhaps, but still attached to life at all four corners. […] Often the attachment is scarcely perceptible, […] But when the web is pulled askew, hooked up at the edge, torn in the middle, one remembers that these webs are not spun in midair by incorporeal creatures, but are the work of suffering human beings, and are attached to the grossly material things, like health and money and the houses we live in’ (A Room of One's Own).

Human beings are extraordinary.  We tie shoelaces, build swing-sets, invent wheels.  We are also, as mother Woolf sagaciously points out, all bound to the material world.  On a planet of abundant resources (if wisely managed), the facts of poverty and disempowerment are unjust, let alone unproductive.  Oxfam’s employees and volunteers understand that as human beings, we all attach our webs to the same rafters, and dedicate a bit of their lives to helping people find the space to weave webs of humanity.  We’re not the only ones who appreciate your support.

Amy, Chris, Sandra and Sarah are Virginia Woolverines.  Armed with powerful puns, and wit you could skin a bear with, they are, like most women, remarkably strong for their size.   In the spirit of this event, they believe that purchasing a pig in honour of one’s mother-in-law, brother or tree-hugging niece is not only the best way to make your secret Santa assignment think twice before screwing their face up at your taste in gifts.  Sponsoring another one of your mate’s crazy exercises in self-torture, is not simply a way to keep the soul-devouring servings of steaming hot guilt from your plate.  Put simply, such witty gifts for many are ‘a match struck unexpectedly in the dark.’

As a spider once told a pig who asked why she had saved his life:

"You have been my friend. […] That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die... By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heavens knows anyone's life can stand a little of that."
