City Girls
October 7 2008
Welcome to the City Girls Team page! Over the next six months we will keep you up to date with our training and fundraising as we count down to April 4 and 5 2009.
Lesley, Margaret, Jan & Kerry are the 'City Girls' and 2009 will be our fourth Oxfam Trailwalker together! Yes we have participated three times before and no we are not mad- well maybe a bit! What started as a one off challenge in 2006 has somehow become an annual event. In 2008 we crossed the line in 24 hours and 59 minutes and were extremely proud to win the 'Fastest Veteran Women's Team' award.
In the last 3 years we have raised over $12,000 for Oxfam- thanks to our fantastic supporters and sponsors. This year we again hope to post a very respectable total, further supporting the amazing work Oxfam does.
We have all enjoyed a bit of a 'training break' over the winter and are now thinking seriously about all the hard work that lies ahead of us. Our motto is 'Pain is Temporary, Pride is Forever" and we are already looking forward to taking part in the 2009 Oxfam Trailwalker!
January 23 2009
It has been back to reality for us all over the last few weeks, working and trying to train as well! We all worked hard on our training over the holidays, getting together and building up the momentum! We had a great day out between Christmas and New Year where we enjoyed a lovely walk to Cathedral Cove with Margaret's family. We have a number of fun training weekends and fundraising events planned over the next 2 months in the build up to the big event! Watch this space!
February 20 2009
It is now only 42 days until the event and our training is really building up! We spent Waitangi Weekend at Cooks Beach training together. It was great getting out on the trail as a team and it gave us lots of time to discuss our strategies for this years 100km walk. We always have lots of fun when we are together and a 6 1/2 hour walk just speeds by! Really!! We also enjoyed a happy hour where we mapped out the rest of our training! Back home and all back at work fulltime, training is squeezed in whenever we can! With Lesley and Margaret in Auckland and Jan and Kerry in Putaruru we are lucky to always have a partner to train with in between team training weekends! We have our regular walks, Lesley and Margaret enjoy One Tree Hill and the Waitakares and Jan and Kerry frequent the Te Waihou and Arapuni walkways.
We are delighted that we will have the same support crew as last year-all those smelly socks can't have put them off! They are making plans already too. We are so grateful to these four wonderful people: Trish, Lynne, Lee and Lyle!
This week we are really excited to see the article about Lesley and the City Girls in the "GOOD" magazine. Check it out!
March 8 2009
There are now only 3 weekends until the big event! It has been a busy weekend for the City Girls in Auckland and in Putaruru. We have all spent between 9 and 10 hours walking this weekend and are feeling great- well maybe a bit tired! We are being asked if we are obsessed with walking but we just know that we have to do the training so we can do the 100km! We are looking forward to getting together at the Rotorua Walking Festival in 2 weeks- it will be our last big training session! Our fundraising is starting to build up too with some donations to put on and more promised!
March 22 2009
It has been a HUGE weekend for the City Girls. We participated in the Rotorua Walking Festival, walking 42km on Saturday and 30 km on Sunday. This is a fantastic, very well run event which attracts walkers from all over the globe! Check it out at www.rotoruawalkingfestival.org.nz. We really enjoyed the very scenic walks-Redwoods and Whakarewarewa forest on Saturday and Rotorua city on Sunday, also chatting with many people along the way! We even met a Belgian Trailwalker!!! A special hi to Mike from Rotorua who we enjoyed talking with on Sunday! We hope you found your way to our page Mike! A big thanks also to Bronwyn and family who allowed us to stay at their AMAZING house at Lake Tarawera- WOW the views are awesome! This means our training is almost at an end-at least the real hard stuff is. There are now only 2 weeks to go and even though this is our fourth time we are still getting nervous!!
April 2 2009
Only 2 more sleeps to go and we are in organisation mode!! We are all packing, baking, and shopping for essential supplies-oh and working! We are delighted that our fundraising total has really increased lately and we thank all our wonderful supporters!
A very special thanks in advance to five FANTASTIC people: THE CITY GIRLS SUPPORT CREW:
TRISH, LYNNE, KAREN, LEE and LYLE. You are the BEST! We could not contemplate doing this without you guys-YOU ROCK!!!! Welcome Karen- we hope you enjoy yourself!
Thank you for giving up your weekend for us. We really appreciate you!
April 6 2009
WOW!!! What a FANTASTIC weekend! The City Girls are pleased to report that we all completed the 100km walk in an official time of 23 hours and 4 minutes! We are very excited about our new City Girls record! We are eternally grateful to our AMAZING support crew: Trish, Lynne, Karen and Lyle. You can see them performing just one of their chants on the Trailwalker website! They had a new chant for us at each checkpoint! We could never have done the walk without these guys.
Thank you support crew for: driving the camper van and support car, motivating us at every checkpoint, dressing up and doing chants for us, serving us yummy food, filling our bottles, taping up our smelly feet, helping us find things, giving us a candlelit dinner at checkpoint 4, dressing up for dinner-sorry we didn't, decorating our campervan, massaging us-especailly when we were very dirty!, reminding us to take things, giving us wet wipes, putting the seats out, putting the seats away, doing dishes, cleaning out the van when we got back, being resourceful, writing an amazing James Bond, Charlie's Angels, Trailwalker Mills and Boons serial story for us to read on each leg, recording messages from our friends to play at checkpoint 4 for motivation...........and there's proably much more that I've forgotten. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
We would also like to thank:
- Mark and Ivan at Merino Socks NZ Ltd for the merino socks. We love them and highly recommend them!
- Margaret and Lyle at Imageland-for all the embroidery.
- Wayne and Jan at Putaruru Electrical for sponsoring the Camper Van-again!
- Art 'n Signs-Dean and Karen who painted our fantastic City Girls banner!
- Putaruru Primary School, staff and pupils who were so outstanding in their support- some even getting up at 5.30 to make it to the start!
A special hi to all the teams we met along the way! Thanks to our supporters for all the texts, they were fantastic and kept us going-do some of you not sleep????
Looks like we have stopped saying 'Never Again!!'.......

Dear Mrs Farrant,
I think you are a great teacher. I would like you to teach me when I get into the seniors next year beacause you are very nice. Because I like you, I wanted to earn some money for you and your charity. Mum read the class the school newspaper and it told us about your 100km walk for Oxfam. We then had a look on your website the "City Girls". It was a cool website. I have worked really hard and have saved $20.00. These are the things that I did to earn money for you and Oxfam. One weekend this term some people trashed the juniors playground by getting into the big rubbish bin. The area looked dreadful. I helped to clean it up. It was a little bit hard because everything was sticky with disgusting water. I earned $5. In the weekend I cleaned the floor of V4 with the rug doctor. It took at least 2 hours. I earned $5.00. Yesterday I picked up cabbage tree leaves by myself. Grace said that she was going to help but all she did was be annoying. I had to do the lot and the sun was beaming down on me and it was hard work. It took me an hour and a half. I earned $5.00. All this term I have been doing my omework without complaining. For each night I do my homework without complainging I get $1.00. I was allowed to give you $5.00 of my homework money. That makes $20.00 altogether. I hope that this money helps you with your walk and I wish you good luck. Give it your best as well. Have a fun time and get to the finish.
from Haydn.
