NZ’s largest coffee chain switches to Fairtrade

10 Jun 08

The Fairtrade market in New Zealand continues to grow rapidly as more and more shoppers demand Fairtrade products. BP’s Wild Bean Café is the latest to make the switch to Fairtrade coffee in all its outlets, in response to growing consumer demand for ethically sourced products.

“It just goes to show how much power we have as consumers,” says Linda Broom, Oxfam’s Fair Trade Coordinator. “The incredible growth in the Fairtrade market here is a real tribute to everyone who has been supporting the Fairtrade campaign over the last few years. The more we all ask our supermarkets and our cafes to stock Fairtrade products, the more they have to listen.”

There are now more than 30 different companies offering Fairtrade labelled coffee – up from just one in 2004 – and a growing range of Fairtrade products is available in some supermarkets. New World Victoria Park stocks 21 different Fairtrade lines and has just been voted the best Fairtrade supermarket in the country, with Fresh Choice in Dunedin a close runner up.

Oxfam is working with the Fair Trade Association and World Vision to encourage shoppers to petition their local supermarkets to stock more Fairtrade labelled products.
