Volunteer opportunities

The Oxfam Trailwalker event is made possible by the amazing support of an army of volunteers. This year we will again call on the generosity of volunteers between the afternoon of Friday March 30 and the night of Sunday April 1, 2011.

  • Oxfam Trailwalker volunteer registrations have closed. They will open for the 2013 event in January. Please send all volunteer related enquires to the Oxfam Trailwalker Events Team at info@oxfamtrailwalker.org.nz

We're looking for volunteers to fill a range of exciting roles at the event – most are group roles which would be great fun with a friend, such as the Road Marshal or Runner (for errands) role, and some are individual roles, such as the Equipment Crew or Registration roles.

Roles include:

  • Equipment Crew: Help set up, transport, and remove equipment and supplies for the event.
  • Registration: Welcome participants, check them in and prepare them with the information needed to embark on their adventure.
  • Trail Marking Team: Head out on the trail to place markings along specific sections of the trail.
  • Checkpoint Manager/Assistant: Manage the smooth running of the checkpoint and all the volunteers during the duration of your CP set up, pack down and opening hours.
  • Check In Operator: Check-in arriving teams in a timely and accurate manner using the laptop provided at your CP
  • Checkpoint Parking Marshal: Direct support crew and spectator vehicles to parking spaces within the checkpoint.
  • Checkpoint Host: Assist wherever help is needed at the checkpoints, set up and stock drinks and snacks for participants, ensure urn has hot water available at all times and create a positive atmosphere.
  • PA Announcer Assistant: Provide stats to the finish line announcer on teams as the walk down the finish gantry!
  • Medal Presenter: Present teams with their medals at the finish line.
  • Event Courier: Be on call at the Control Centre, ready to pick up or deliver gear and supplies wherever it may be needed during the event.
  • Glow Stick Team: Teams of two or three head out on the trail to mark a section with glow sticks.
  • Road Marshal: H elp provide safe passage for participants at key road crossings along the 100km trail.
  • Tail-End Charlie:  To follow the last participant team to check that no one is left on the course
  • Trail Clearing Team: Walk a leg of the trail once the event has been completed, picking up trail markers and clearing any debris along the way.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet new people, give back to the community, have a good time with friends, and spend a weekend outdoors. Your time and effort will help Oxfam in the fight against poverty during our largest fundraising event.

The event runs straight through Saturday night and volunteers who are willing to work a night shift are hugely appreciated! Shifts vary in length but will not exceed 8 hours. You may do more than one job per shift. As a thank you for your time, Oxfam will provide you with an official event T-shirt, a volunteer handbook and all meals during the weekend. Volunteers do need to arrange their own transport to and from the work area and accommodation should you require it, but you can get 50% discount on accommodation at YHA Taupo - ask us for details.
