HIV and AIDS is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today. It pushes many families into poverty and poverty makes people more vulnerable to the disease. Oxfam is committed to fighting the disease and to breaking this cycle.

Oxfam is working to bring education, awareness and understanding of HIV and AIDS, to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, fighting for access to treatments and supporting people living with the virus.
We are currently working on HIV and AIDS programmes with parters in:
Papua New Guinea
- AT projects are working to provide safe water and ‘living with dignity’ kits to people living with HIV and AIDS and their carers. They also talk to families and the community about HIV and AIDS, hoping to breakdown the fear and stigma surrounding the illness.

Vanuatu
- Wan Smolbag theatre group uses radio and live theatre to deal with issues around HIV and AIDS, reproductive health and gender. Their radio soap drama has become so popular people frequently rush home from work to catch the latest installment.

Africa
- HIV and AIDS affects the most productive part of the population undertaking the most essential work, leaving fewer and weaker people to plant and harvest crops, work in industries, teach, nurse or care for their families. HIV and AIDS reduces GDP growth per capita by an estimated 1 percent annually in Africa.

Asia
- Thailand has over two million migrants, from countries such as Burma, Cambodia and Laos. Oxfam is supporting the work of a local partner, the Raks Thai Foundation, in promoting better access to treatment, reducing infection and improving the quality of support and care for people and their families living with HIV and AIDS.
