Water and the MDGs

In 2000, leaders and heads of state from around the world signed the Millennium Declaration, which sets out targets for action to lift millions of people out of poverty by 2015.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are clear and direct challenges to countries and international organisations to focus on basic human rights and needs, from guaranteeing primary education for all children to working to eradicate AIDS and malaria.

The seventh MDG seeks to halve the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

The Oxfam Water for Survival Programme is working on sustainable water infrastructure projects at a community level and through local partnerships in developing countries to help realise the seventh MDG.
