Feeding the family

Before we had the vegetable garden,
my children were in a bad condition,”
said Lorensa. “My daughter was very
skinny, but now she is healthy.”

Over Christmas, many of you chose to buy or were lucky enough to receive an Oxfam Unwrapped gift. These generous gifts are helping people like Lorensa da Costa in East Timor.

Oxfam first met Lorensa when we started a community garden project in her village. At the time, her family survived on a diet of squash, papaya and pumpkins. They also ate the leaves and flowers. Malnutrition was a serious issue, especially for the children.

With the provision of good quality seed, training in the use of organic fertilisers and how to improve soil quality, the community now grow a wide variety of vegetables including carrots, potatoes, spinach and beans. The thriving community garden now grows enough food to feed more than 70 children, so the whole community benefits.
