Give water. Give Life.

Doreen Nauvana, mother of Jemaine, Jarnella and Jenice, is a school teacher committed to keeping the children of Sivuna village safe.
"We have cried out for water for so long...our dream will be fulfilled" – Doreen Nauvana, Sivuna, Bougainville.

“We have cried out for water for so long… our dream will be fulfilled.”

You may think this sounds like a modest ambition for Doreen, the mother from Bougainville who said these words. But I want to explain there are two things that are really important to Doreen.

The first is that Doreen’s dream is water. She doesn’t dream of a bigger house, or nice clothes - just clean, disease-free water. The kind that won’t kill her children.

The second thing is that Doreen’s dream will only come true if she receives support.

For three months a year, the rain water that Doreen’s village saves runs out, and her only option is a small creek thirty minutes walk away.  Doreen collects her water in 20-litre buckets – that’s 20 kilograms – treading the dirt path trying not to spill any of her hard work.

Worst of all, the water Doreen works so hard to get is not safe to drink.

Doreen’s children often get sick from drinking the water. In fact, just one cup of dirty water can hold up to 10,000 parasites. Dirty water can be deadly, especially for the young.

What we have achieved so far

With the gifts from caring Oxfam supporters, 16 villages in Bougainville now have access to safe water. That’s nearly 10,000 people! It’s an achievement you can be proud to be part of.

Everlyn Mikasimo, our water, sanitation and hygiene coordinator, tells me, “When you go back the kids look healthy…you’re sustaining their lives”!

Yet our work there is not done. More than six out of 10 people in Bougainville still live without access to safe drinking water. Children are at risk. They need your help.

With your help, this year we can bring safe water to nearly 10,000 more people like Doreen and her children.

The solution

Doreen Nauvana, mother of Jemaine, Jarnella and Jenice, is a school teacher committed to keeping the children of Sivuna village safe.
Bridget, Francisco and Gwendolyn wash their hands at an Oxfam tap stand in Poisinami village, Central Bougainville.

Did you know that when you add safe water, adequate toilets and some education about health and hygiene, you can reduce deaths by 65 per cent?

Your support will fund these three essential elements for 10,000 more people in 2013:

  • Safe water by constructing 24 gravity-fed and rain water harvesting systems
  • 300 latrines to end the disease-spreading practice of open defecation
  • Health and hygiene education through meetings where unhealthy practices and their impact are identified. The community then finds and commits to solutions such as always washing hands with soap and preparing food in a safe manner.

Your gift will provide a solution that lasts.
