Former Indonesian President Suharto, who died today aged 86, will be remembered for ordering the killing of hundreds of thousands of communists and the brutal invasion of East Timor in 1975.

East Timor is still rebuilding itself after regaining independence in 1999 and ending Indonesia’s savage rule.

There are still more than 30,000 people living in overcrowded, internally displaced persons camps in the capital, Dili.

“Many are too afraid to go back to their houses and other people have had their houses destroyed or occupied and can’t go back,” says Oxfam humanitarian programme coordinator Virginia Dawson.
