Tropical Cyclone Ula could bring further heartache to people hit by Cyclone Pam last year as it passes close to Vanuatu’s southern islands this afternoon.

The cyclone is expected to pass close to islands in Tafea province as a Category 4 storm and Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office has issued a red alert for the islands Tanna, Futuna and Aneityum. Vanuatu Meteorological Services said wind speeds at its centre were estimated to be up to 165km/hr, and predicted to increase further.

During March 2015 Tropical Cyclone Pam struck parts of Vanuatu at a Category 5 level, causing widespread damage in Tafea province, with the worst impacts reported on Tanna.

Oxfam is monitoring the storm and ready to support any response efforts led by the Vanuatu Government and other humanitarian agencies if required.
