For Shobnam and her family, limited access to clean water and toilets is their reality. However this reality quickly turns to a nightmare when it rains.

Meet Shobnam Das, aged 7, and her mother Jhumur, as they walk through the network of lanes through Horijon Polli.

Like most residents in this Bangladeshi slum, her parents are cleaners.

From the low-caste Hindu sweeper community, they are ostracized from wider society.

Cleaning dishes near a drain in Horijon Polli

Because there are so few toilets in Horijon Polli, and there is no garbage collection, the drains that line the slum's streets are often clogged with human and household waste.

The drains overflow, especially during monsoon season.

Polluted water floods the streets and people’s homes with raw sewage and rotting garbage.

Washing clothes at a communal pump in the slum

That means Shobnam, and the other children in her slum, have to live and play in the filthy water.

They are at great risk of getting sick with diseases like pneumonia and diarrhoea.

Because there is no reliable source of clean water, Shobnam and her family often have no choice but to cook, clean and wash in contaminated water.

Can you help Shobnam's wish of clean water and a working toilet come true?

With your help, we can give Bangladeshi families access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation.

It can save lives, keep families safe and give kids like Shobnam a chance for a happy, healthy future.
