The Ugandan women who make these beautiful pieces carefully sort strips of old magazine pages into particular colours to create these beautiful combinations of paper coil beads. Firstly the strips are cut and sorted, then they are dipped in glue and coiled up to make the beads. Magazines are an inexpensive material to use, the process is beneficial for the environment and the women can use their creativity to develop these beautiful items.

This recycled necklace is made by The National Association of Women’s Organizations of Uganda (NAWOU). NAWOU was formed in 1992. It is a local NGO which works with women all over Uganda. Through their Marketing Network Project, handicraft artisans from all over Uganda are trained in product development and linked to markets locally and overseas. Through this project, NAWOU teaches the artisans new designs and trends, but also importantly, how to control quality and standardise their products. Read more here.
