In response to the new Foreign Minister, Murray McCully's intention to fold the government aid agency (NZAID) back under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) in March 09, Oxfam called on the government to ask them to undertake a thorough review, including evidence of the likely impact on the effectiveness of aid, and including consultation with experts, Pacific countries, NGOs and MPs.
Thank you to everyone who took action with us! In the past few months thousands of people called on the Minister to ensure that aid is focused on the needs of the poor, for aid to be effective and for decision-making processes to be transparent and accountable.
Despite our concerns, Murray McCully announced last week that NZAID is to be reintegrated into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. However, while significant changes have been made, there are signs that your voices were influential! Oxfam will be closely monitoring the effect of these changes on aid delivery.
