Oxfam has a vision: a world without poverty where people are valued and treated equally, on a planet that has the natural resources to sustain them.
We're mobilising the power of people to end poverty. This unique partnership between Oxfam, our supporters and the local organisations and communities we work with is lifting lives for good and creating a better future for us all.
Around the globe, we work to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. We save lives and help rebuild livelihoods when crisis strikes. And we campaign so that the voices of the poor influence the local and global decisions that affect them.
1. Help people claim their right to a better life
When people have the power to claim their basic human rights, they can escape poverty – permanently. We’re supporting women, men and young people worldwide to exercise their civil and political rights, influence the decisions of people in power and hold them accountable for their actions.
2. Advancing gender justice
The right to gender justice underpins all of our work. Human development is driven by empowered women. But women and girls are still massively underrepresented and often oppressed. We’re empowering them to speak out, demand justice and assert their leadership, and we’re working to significantly reduce the prevalence of violence against women.
3. Saving lives
People living in poverty are disproportionately affected by disasters and conflict. When disaster strikes, we are there. We’re helping people caught up in natural disasters and conflict. We’re providing clean water, food and sanitation in disaster zones. And we strive to ensure that civilians are protected too. We also seek to reduce the risk to people at risk of future disasters by continuing to work with them long after the immediate crisis is over.
4. Food for all
Right now, almost a billion of us go to bed hungry each night. Not because there isn’t enough food to go around, but because of the deep injustice in the way the food system works. We're working to protect and better food supplies so that people always have enough to eat, and will enjoy greater food security, income, prosperity and resilience.
5. Help people claim a fairer share of natural resources
Natural resources are vital for prosperity. We’re helping marginalised people become more prosperous and resilient despite increasing competition for land, water, food and energy sources, and stresses caused by a changing climate.
6. Increase access to essential services
We're pushing for more and better-targeted money to go to basic development such as health and education, so that more women, men, girls and boys can participate fully in the economic, social and democratic life of their societies.
