International development agency Oxfam is preparing to close its response to the Indian Ocean tsunami at the end of this month, four years after the disaster. Oxfam and its local partner organisations assisted 2.5 million people in seven tsunami-affected countries in the largest emergency programme in its history.

International agency Oxfam today launched a $10 million public appeal to address the lethal cholera and hunger crisis that is rapidly deteriorating across Zimbabwe.  Oxfam will be providing clean water, sanitation and food to over one million people and is calling on the public and international donors to support the emergency appeal as it substantially scales up its efforts in the country.

Poznan, Poland--The UN climate negotiations have not shown the urgency and political will needed to fight climate change and keep millions of people safe, Oxfam International said today.

Poznan, Poland – International agency Oxfam welcomed a step forward in negotiations to allow developing countries direct access to the Adaptation Fund, one of the most intractable issues of this climate change conference. Oxfam however denounced the stonewalling by rich countries of another decision that could have made a real difference to those suffering the impacts of the climate crisis.

Sixty years ago today, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the cornerstone document that was created in the aftermath of unimaginable atrocities.  This Declaration, and the legal documents that stemmed from it, have helped us combat torture, discrimination and hunger. And now, this venerable document should guide us in the fight against one of the greatest challenges ever to face humankind: climate change.

International development agency Oxfam is bracing for a shortfall that could exceed $500,000 as a result of the global financial crisis and the fall in the New Zealand dollar. Oxfam recognises that these are difficult times for many New Zealanders, but is calling for generosity to be extended to those less fortunate than ourselves.
