One of the worst earthquakes in this area in nearly 100 years, struck Turkiye (Turkey) in the early morning hours of 6 February. Multiple strong aftershocks were felt across the region for hours after the first quake. These earthquakes have already affected more than 13 million people across Turkiye, Syria, and Lebanon, with early reports showing more than 20,00 people killed and hundreds of thousands left homeless.
The scale of this disaster is huge and the focus is on search and rescue efforts. Access is incredibly challenging because roads and key transport links have been damaged. This tragedy has been made worse by freezing winter conditions. People urgently need shelter, food and blankets.
Now more than ever Oxfam needs to respond – quickly.
