Stand With Our Pacific Neighbours – Fair Starts Here

The climate crisis is unfair.

Extreme storms and wildly changing seas are threatening our neighbours in the Pacific. The communities who have done the least to cause the climate crisis are facing its worst.

But together, we can make a difference.

As New Zealanders get ready to vote in this year’s election, we call on our political leaders to renew and increase their climate funding commitments to our Pacific neighbours.

Being Kiwi means looking out for our neighbours. When disaster strikes, we stick together. Our neighbours need us and we need them.

That’s how Aotearoa should be. Sticking by our neighbours in the Pacific through thick and thin. Making sure everyone has what they need. Not just to survive, but to thrive together.

We might be a small country in the global scheme of things, but here in the Pacific we can make a big difference. We’ve done it before. Oxfam Aotearoa has praised the good that New Zealand’s climate funding has done to support our Pacific neighbours. In 2025, we called on our leaders to keep up the good work.

But this Government has broken their promises to the Pacific. Climate Minister Simon Watts joined other leaders at the 2025 UN Climate talks in pledging to triple climate funding to lower-income countries by 2030. But instead, this Government has failed to renew New Zealand’s dedicated climate funding for our Pacific neighbours.

As Kiwi, we’re better than this. We want to support our Pacific neighbours to recover, rebuild and be resilient as they face the escalating effects of climate chaos.
